- Express is the cheapest way to send samples under about 70 kg. Air freight wins for urgent stock from about 100 kg.
- Sea LCL is the best value for most first orders, from roughly 2 to 20 cbm. Budget USD 170–250 per cbm plus CFS and document fees.
- A 20ft container (USD 5,085–6,215 in Oct 2026) beats LCL at around 20 cbm. A 40ft costs USD 6,615–9,400 to Jeddah.
- Container rates are still about double mid-2025 levels, and quotes are valid for days. Always get a fresh, all-in quote.
- Duty (5% of CIF), 15% import VAT and a SAR 350 SABER certificate often cost more than the freight itself.
Shipping from China to Saudi Arabia can cost a few hundred dollars or several thousand. The price depends on one thing more than any other: how much you send.
That's good news. Once you know your volume, picking the cheapest option is simple.
Small parcels go by express, priced per kilo. Pallets go by air or by sea in a shared container (LCL). Once you fill about 20 cubic metres, your own container wins.
Below are this month's rates for every option, four worked examples and a free estimator. We'll also cover the duty and VAT that come on top. For booking, customs and SABER steps, see our guide to shipping from China to Saudi Arabia.
China to Saudi freight costs at a glance
Here's what each option costs right now, from South or East China to Jeddah.
| Express | Air freight | Sea LCL | Sea FCL | DDP e-commerce line | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Price | USD 5–15/kg (often ~13.50) | USD 4.50–9.50/kg | USD 170–250/cbm + USD 40–85/cbm CFS + USD 160–320 per shipment | 20ft USD 5,085–6,215; 40ft USD 6,615–9,400 | Air USD 7–16/kg; sea USD 100–210/cbm |
| Transit | 1–5 days | 2–7 days | 25–35 days | 20–30 days port to port | ~5–12 days to the door (air) |
| Billed on | Chargeable kg (÷5,000) | Chargeable kg (÷6,000) | cbm, or 1,000 kg = 1 cbm | Per container | kg or cbm |
| Best size | Under ~70 kg | ~100–1,000 kg | ~2–20 cbm | ~20 cbm and up | Single orders to shoppers |
| Duty and VAT | Usually collected by courier | Extra | Extra | Extra | Included |
Quotes for Dammam are almost identical. That matters if your stock is going to Riyadh, as we'll see in the notes.
How is each option priced?
Each mode uses a different unit. That's why quotes are so hard to compare at first.
Here's how each one works:
- Express and air: per chargeable kilo. Carriers bill the higher of the real weight and the volumetric weight. Air divides the carton volume in cm³ by 6,000. Express uses a smaller divisor, so bulky parcels cost more.
- LCL: per cubic metre. LCL (less than container load) means your cartons share a container with other shippers. You're billed per cbm, or per tonne if that's higher, with a one-cbm minimum.
- LCL extras. Your cartons pass through a CFS (container freight station) at both ends to be packed and unpacked. Both those charges and a fixed fee for documents, port handling and the delivery order are in the table above.
- FCL: per container. FCL (full container load) is a flat price per box. A 20ft holds about 28 cbm of cartons. A 40ft holds about twice that.
Light, bulky products like pillows or plastic storage boxes hit the volumetric rule hardest. Measure your cartons before you ask for an air quote.
What would your shipment cost? Four worked examples
We priced four typical shipments from South China to Jeddah. Every figure uses the same maths as the estimator below.
| Shipment | Express | Air freight | Sea LCL | 20ft FCL |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 50 kg of samples (0.25 cbm) | USD 250–750 | USD 225–475 | USD 370–655 | USD 5,085–6,215 |
| 500 kg first order (3 cbm) | USD 3,000–9,000 | USD 2,250–4,750 | USD 790–1,325 | USD 5,085–6,215 |
| 6 cbm of stock (1,200 kg) | USD 6,000–18,000 | USD 5,400–11,400 | USD 1,420–2,330 | USD 5,085–6,215 |
| 20 cbm restock (4,000 kg) | USD 20,000–60,000 | USD 18,000–38,000 | USD 4,360–7,020 | USD 5,085–6,215 |
Freight only. LCL includes CFS, documents and destination port fees.
50 kg of samples: send it express
Air looks cheapest on paper. But air rates are built for bigger loads, so most forwarders steer small consignments to express.
At the typical express rate, you'd pay about USD 675. It arrives in under a week, door to door, with no broker to hire.
500 kg first order: LCL, or air if you're in a hurry
Say it's a test order of 1,000 units. LCL works out to roughly USD 0.80–1.30 per unit.
Air costs about three times as much but lands in days, not a month. That's worth it if you're racing to stock up before White Friday.
6 cbm: LCL by a wide margin
Here's how the four modes compare for a mid-sized shipment:
LCL costs about a third of a 20ft container at this size. The box would be mostly empty, and you'd be paying to ship air.
20 cbm restock: time for a container
Now LCL and a 20ft container cost about the same. The container is also faster and handled less, so it's the better buy from here on.
LCL or FCL: when does a container pay off?
On current prices, a 20ft container becomes cheaper than LCL at about 20 cbm. The price ranges start to overlap a little earlier, from around 14 cbm.
Why does it take so much volume? LCL prices are per cbm, so they climb with every carton. A container is a flat fee, whether it's half full or packed to the roof.
Past what a 20ft holds, book a 40ft. Packed full, it works out to roughly USD 115–160 per cbm, the cheapest rate on this lane.

Red Sea and Hormuz tensions pushed Gulf rates up sharply: a 40ft to Jeddah went from ~$3,250–3,650 (mid-2025) to $8,200–12,000 (Aug 2026), and Oct 2026 quotes still run $6,600–9,400. Quotes are valid for days, not months.
Freight only. Excludes customs duty (5% of CIF), 15% import VAT, SABER shipment certificate (SAR 350), origin/destination charges (except LCL CFS/docs) and inland delivery.

Why did China–Saudi rates move so much in 2026?
Red Sea risk, Hormuz tensions and pricier ship fuel pushed Gulf rates up sharply this year. Jeddah, on the Red Sea, was hit hardest.
- Mid-2025USD 3,250–3,650 per 40ft
Typical South China to Jeddah quotes before the 2026 spike.
- Aug 2026USD 8,200–12,000 per 40ft
Red Sea corridor peak, including Jeddah. Dammam was around USD 9,500.
- Oct 2026USD 6,615–9,400 per 40ft
Off the peak but still about double mid-2025. Quotes valid for days, not months.
The good news? Rates have come off their summer peak. But last year's price lists are badly out of date, so throw out any quote that isn't dated this month.
Duty and VAT come on top of freight
Freight is only part of your bill. Saudi customs charges are calculated on the CIF value: goods plus insurance plus freight.
Here's what you'll pay at the border:
- Customs duty. Usually 5% of CIF. Some tariff lines are higher.
- Customs service fee. 0.15% of CIF, capped at SAR 500.
- Import VAT. 15%, charged on CIF plus duty.
- SABER shipment certificate. SAR 350 per commercial shipment of regulated goods.
For example, take the 6 cbm LCL shipment and say it holds USD 12,000 of goods. Add ocean freight and insurance, and its CIF value is about SAR 49,950.
Duty, the customs fee, VAT and SABER add up to about SAR 10,800. That's more than the whole LCL freight bill.
The catch? Most sellers budget for freight and forget the taxes.
Don't panic. If you're VAT-registered in Saudi Arabia, you can usually reclaim the import VAT. Your real cost then falls to about SAR 2,900.
Run your own numbers in the landed cost calculator, which adds duty, fees and VAT to your freight estimate.
How do you compare China to Saudi freight quotes?
Line up quotes on the total cost to your warehouse door, not the headline ocean or air rate. Local charges often decide which quote is really cheaper.

Notes for Riyadh sellers
- Riyadh takes about 44% of Saudi delivery orders, so many 3PL warehouses sit there.
- Dammam is the natural port for Riyadh, about 400 km away by truck or rail. Its container rates are close to Jeddah's.
- Ask for a through-rate to the Riyadh dry port, so trucking and handling are in one price.
- Jeddah is much further from Riyadh by road. A cheaper Jeddah ocean rate rarely survives that trip.
Notes for Chinese sellers
- DDP e-commerce lines (专线) bundle air freight, clearance and last-mile delivery into one per-kg price. Many collect cash on delivery too.
- Check that every DDP quote is dated this month and names duty and VAT as included.
- Selling on noon without a Saudi company? noon Global Shipping lets you drop each order at its Shenzhen hub. Noon then pays the freight, duty and VAT.
- Keep your carton sizes on file. Chargeable weight is where most first quotes go wrong.
Notes for sellers with a Dubai hub
- Containers to Jebel Ali were cheaper in October 2026: a 40ft cost USD 4,967–6,953.
- Trucking on to Saudi Arabia adds Saudi customs, 15% VAT at entry and 2–5 days' delivery. It pays mainly for stock that serves several GCC markets.
- Compare both lanes in the estimator, then read our China to UAE shipping guide.

Frequently asked questions
For anything above a couple of cubic metres, sea freight. LCL is cheapest up to about 20 cbm, and a full container is cheapest beyond that. For a single small parcel, an express courier or a DDP e-commerce line usually costs less than booking freight.
