- Salla takes no commission on sales. Shopify adds 0.6–2% on card and BNPL orders in Saudi Arabia, because Shopify Payments isn't available there.
- In year one, a Saudi store selling SAR 15,000 a month pays SAR 990 on Salla Plus, against about SAR 4,230 on Shopify Grow.
- At SAR 50,000 a month, Salla Pro costs SAR 2,990 a year. Shopify Grow costs about SAR 9,600–12,000, including a ZATCA app.
- Shopify wins on themes, apps, scaling and selling across borders. Salla wins on Arabic, local payments and shipping.
- Switching works both ways. Salla imports products straight from Shopify, and a Salla to Shopify move takes about 2–4 weeks.
Salla or Shopify? It's the first big decision for almost every new Gulf store.
Salla is Saudi Arabia's home-grown store builder, Arabic from the first click. Shopify is the global giant, with the deepest toolkit in ecommerce.
My verdict: if you sell mainly to Saudi shoppers, Salla costs less and gets you live faster. If you're based in the UAE, sell across borders or need a highly custom store, Shopify is the stronger home.
Below you'll find a full year-one cost at two sales levels, then how the two compare on payments, Arabic, themes, apps, scaling and switching. Weighing Zid too? See our Shopify vs Salla vs Zid comparison.

Who is Salla best for?
Salla suits sellers who want to be selling in Saudi Arabia this week:
- First-time Saudi sellers with a CR or freelance document and a small budget.
- Arabic-first brands, because the dashboard, checkout, invoices and texts are all Arabic.
- COD-heavy stores, thanks to 200+ shipping partners with cash collection built in.
- Small teams who'd rather not juggle a gateway contract, apps and translation.
Who is Shopify best for?
Shopify suits brands with bigger or wider plans:
- UAE-based brands, because Shopify Payments works there.
- Foreign brands adding the Gulf to stores in the US, Europe or Asia.
- Design-led brands that want premium themes and custom features.
- Fast-growing stores that need deep automation, B2B or a headless build.
1. Year-one cost: Salla wins for Saudi stores
Salla is cheaper for a Saudi store at every sales level we tested. The gap comes from one fee.
Shopify Payments isn't available in Saudi Arabia. So a Saudi Shopify store connects a local gateway, and Shopify adds its own third-party fee on every card, Apple Pay and BNPL order. Salla charges no commission at all.
Worked example: SAR 15,000 and SAR 50,000 a month
Here's a full first year for a Saudi store paid by card and Apple Pay. Both stores pay yearly. Gateway fees are similar on both platforms, so they're left out.
| Year-one cost (ex-VAT) | Salla | Shopify Basic | Shopify Grow |
|---|---|---|---|
| At SAR 15,000 a month | Plus | ||
| Subscription | SAR 990 | SAR 855 | SAR 2,430 |
| Shopify third-party fee | – | SAR 3,600 (2%) | SAR 1,800 (1%) |
| ZATCA invoicing app | Not needed yet | Not needed yet | Not needed yet |
| Year-one total | SAR 990 | SAR 4,455 | SAR 4,230 |
| At SAR 50,000 a month | Pro | ||
| Subscription | SAR 2,990 | SAR 855 | SAR 2,430 |
| Shopify third-party fee | – | SAR 12,000 (2%) | SAR 6,000 (1%) |
| ZATCA invoicing app | Included | SAR 1,200–3,600 | SAR 1,200–3,600 |
| Year-one total | SAR 2,990 | SAR 14,055–16,455 | SAR 9,630–12,030 |
Notice the ZATCA line. Sales of SAR 15,000 a month add up to SAR 180,000 a year, which sits under Saudi Arabia's VAT thresholds. At SAR 50,000 a month you must register, so a Shopify store needs a paid e-invoicing app.
That's also why the bigger Salla store moves up to Pro. It adds the VAT settings, staff accounts and branch tools a growing store needs.
A few things move the gap:
- Cash on delivery. Shopify charges no fee on COD orders, so a COD-heavy store pays less.
- Upgrading to Grow. Grow beats Basic once you take about SAR 13,000 a month by card.
- Your theme. Free Horizon themes support RTL. A premium RTL theme adds SAR 560–1,575 once.
- Your app list. Salla apps typically cost SAR 30–300 a month each, and Shopify apps about $10–70. Many sellers end up needing more apps on Shopify for the same local features.

Every plan and extra is broken down in our guides to Salla pricing and Shopify pricing in the UAE and Saudi Arabia.
2. Payments: Salla in Saudi Arabia, Shopify in the UAE
Saudi shoppers mostly pay with mada, the national debit card, often tapped through Apple Pay. Both platforms can take it. Salla just makes it a switch.
On Salla, you submit your CR, ID and IBAN once. Then mada, Visa, Mastercard, Apple Pay, STC Pay, Tabby and Tamara switch on from the dashboard.
Salla also works with gateways such as HyperPay, Moyasar, PayTabs and MyFatoorah. In September 2026 it bought Paylink, a SAMA-licensed payments company, to grow its own payments.
On Shopify in Saudi Arabia, you sign with a local gateway such as Tap, Amazon Payment Services, HyperPay or Geidea. Then you install its app and switch on mada and Apple Pay. STC Pay only comes through a gateway that supports it, such as Amazon Payment Services.
| Salla | Shopify in KSA | Shopify in the UAE | |
|---|---|---|---|
| How you take cards | Salla Pay or a linked gateway | Local gateway app | Shopify Payments |
| Typical mada fee | About 1.75% + SAR 1 | Gateway rate (often about 1%) plus Shopify's fee | Charged as Visa or Mastercard |
| Tabby and Tamara | Built in | Official apps | Official apps |
| Cash on delivery | Built in | Built in, no Shopify fee | Built in, no Shopify fee |
In the UAE, Shopify flips the result. Shopify Payments takes Visa, Mastercard and Apple Pay at 2.9% + AED 1 on Basic, with no third-party fee and no gateway contract.

3. Arabic: Salla
Salla is Arabic-first. The storefront, checkout, invoices, SMS messages and support all work in Arabic and right to left (RTL) from day one.
Shopify handles Arabic well, but you assemble it yourself:
- Admin and checkout layout. Both now display right to left, and the admin is available in Arabic.
- Checkout text. Arabic isn't pre-translated, so you translate the checkout strings and notifications by hand.
- Store translation. The free Translate & Adapt app machine-translates Arabic. Have a native speaker edit titles and menus.
- Support. Shopify's help team and docs are mainly in English. Arabic help comes from partner agencies.

4. Themes and design: Shopify
Shopify has the stronger design toolkit, and it's not close.
Its Theme Store tags 24 premium themes as right-to-left, including Prestige, Impact and Symmetry. They cost $150–420 one-off, and Shopify says its free Horizon themes support RTL too.
You also get full theme code in Liquid, so a developer can build almost anything.
Salla offers 100+ Arabic themes, built for Saudi shoppers. They look clean on phones and need no RTL fixes. CSS and JavaScript edits unlock on Pro.
So who needs Shopify's extra freedom? Mostly fashion, beauty and lifestyle brands where the store itself sells the brand.
Our Arabic Shopify themes guide lists the RTL themes worth testing.
5. Apps: Shopify
Shopify's App Store holds more than 8,000 apps. That covers subscriptions, bundles, loyalty, reviews, upsells, B2B and dropshipping, often with several good options for each.
Salla's app store is smaller, at roughly 550–900 apps. But it's built for local needs: WhatsApp messages, Saudi carriers, Snapchat and TikTok pixels, and Arabic reviews.
Here's the twist. On Shopify, many local basics are apps you add and pay for: a ZATCA invoicing app, a COD form with OTP, carrier connections. On Salla, they're already in the plan.
6. Shipping and COD: Salla
Salla connects to 200+ shipping partners, including Aramex, SMSA, J&T, Naqel and DHL. You get discounted labels, tracking, returns and COD collection inside the dashboard.
On Shopify, it takes more setup:
- Official carrier apps are weak. Aramex's and SMSA's Shopify apps are both rated 1.7 out of 5.
- Aggregators fill the gap. OTO and Shipox connect several Saudi couriers in one dashboard.
- Live courier rates at checkout need Advanced, or Grow with an add-on. On Basic, use flat rates.
COD still matters for new Saudi brands, so add an OTP check to cut fake orders. Our cash on delivery guide shows how.
7. Scaling: Shopify
Both platforms handle serious volume. Salla stores sell millions of riyals a month, and Salla says merchants have sold more than SAR 45 billion through it to date.
The difference is how far each one stretches:
- Salla Pro adds 10+ staff accounts, up to five branches, CSS and JavaScript, and a branded mobile app.
- Salla Special is custom-priced, with multi-store setups, ERP links and a success manager.
- Shopify Grow and Advanced add staff accounts, better reports and lower fees.
- Shopify Plus starts at $2,300 a month on a three-year term. It adds expansion stores, full checkout customisation, B2B and headless storefronts, and cuts the fee to 0.2%.
Planning for Plus? Read our Shopify Plus in the GCC guide before you sign a long contract.
8. Selling across borders: Shopify
Want one store for Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Kuwait and Europe? Shopify Markets is built for it.
It handles currencies, languages and a separate web address for each country. The catch? Shoppers are only charged in their own currency through Shopify Payments, so a Saudi store on a local gateway charges everyone in riyals.
Salla ships across the GCC and beyond, but its multi-market tools are far simpler. Its Paylink deal targets multi-currency payments and collections from abroad, so expect that gap to narrow.
Our Shopify Markets guide walks through a GCC setup.
9. Switching later: a tie
Your first platform isn't a life sentence. You can move either way.
From Salla to Shopify
- What moves. Products, customers and order history transfer. Themes, apps, gateways and shipping rules get rebuilt.
- How. Export from Salla and import with Matrixify (from $20), or test LitExtension or Cart2Cart with a free demo.
- Passwords don't transfer, so send customers account invites.
- Timeline. About 2–4 weeks for a standard store.
From Shopify to Salla
- Products move directly. Salla's help centre describes a direct connection that imports your Shopify products.
- Customers and extras go across with Salla's Excel import, at up to 3,500 rows per file.
- Your payments get simpler. Once mada and Apple Pay run through Salla, the Shopify gateway app and the third-party fee go away.
Either way, redirect every old product and category URL to its new page, one to one. Agencies say rankings usually settle within about 60–90 days. Our Salla to Shopify migration guide has the full checklist.

Which should you choose?
Here's my rule for a new Gulf store.
Selling mainly in Saudi Arabia? Start on Salla. You'll pay less, launch faster and keep everything in Arabic.
Based in the UAE, selling to several countries, or building a design-led brand? Start on Shopify. The extra setup pays you back in tools and reach.
Still torn? Build a test store on both. Add five products, place a mada test order and see which one you'd rather open every morning.
Need a hand building it? Our Saudi Shopify development team can scope a Shopify build, or point you to a Salla specialist.
Notes for Saudi SMEs
- Start on Salla Plus if you need card and Apple Pay payments. The free plan can't take them.
- Subscribe on the web. Salla's prices are about 30% higher through the iPhone app.
- Plan for Pro once you register for VAT or add staff and branches.
- Turn on ZATCA invoicing as soon as you're VAT-registered. Our ZATCA e-invoicing guide explains the deadlines.
Notes for UAE-based stores
- Shopify is the natural fit. Shopify Payments works for UAE mainland and free-zone companies.
- Selling to Saudi Arabia too? Markets lets Saudi shoppers see and pay in SAR, with a 2% conversion fee.
- Mada needs a Saudi gateway. UAE Shopify Payments charges mada cards as Visa or Mastercard, so expect some declines.
See our guide to Shopify in the UAE for the setup.
Notes for foreign and Chinese brands
- Use Shopify. Salla is built around Saudi companies, Saudi ID checks and Saudi bank accounts.
- Add a Gulf market to your existing store, translate it into Arabic and test the checkout right to left.
- Consider Salla later, once you have a Saudi company or a local distributor running the store.
Shopify's Saudi-specific setup is in our Shopify in Saudi Arabia guide.
Notes for fast-growing Saudi brands
- Expanding within a year or two? Starting on Shopify can save you a migration later.
- Staying Saudi-focused? Salla Pro and Special handle large catalogues, branches and ERP links.
- Time any move carefully. Avoid switching right before Ramadan or White Friday.
Frequently asked questions
Salla is built for Saudi businesses, and you need a Saudi CR or freelance document plus a Saudi bank account to get paid. You can still ship to the GCC and some other countries from a Salla store. What you won't get is Shopify-style multi-currency pricing and separate country storefronts.
