- Bahrain is small (1.65 million people) but rich, almost fully online and the Gulf's keenest digital payer, with about 280 BenefitPay payments per resident a year.
- You can start without a Bahraini company: noon runs a Bahrain store and Amazon.ae ships in from the UAE in 2–4 business days.
- A local online store needs a commercial registration (CR) through Sijilat, an e-commerce activity and a live website. Many activities allow 100% foreign ownership.
- VAT is 10%. Parcels shipped in from abroad don't make you register; stock held in Bahrain does, from the first sale. Since May 2026, parcels worth BHD 100 or more pay duty and VAT at the border.
- Offer Benefit debit, BenefitPay, Apple Pay, cards, Tamara and confirmed COD. Tabby doesn't operate in Bahrain.
Bahrain is the Gulf's smallest market, and one of its easiest to win. Almost everyone is online, incomes are high and shoppers already pay for everything by phone.
It's also close. Stock in a Dammam or Riyadh warehouse reaches Manama by road in a day or two.
You can sell here without moving a single box to Bahrain. Or you can set up a local company through one government portal.
Why sell online in Bahrain?
Bahrain packs a lot of buying power into a small island. Here's why it's worth your time:
- Digital-first shoppers. BenefitPay handled about 280 payments per resident in 2025, the strongest phone-payment habit in the Gulf.
- Fast growth. Ecommerce is growing 10–15% a year, the fastest of the Gulf's four smaller markets on ECDB's numbers.
- Less competition. Most brands focus on Dubai and Riyadh, so a good Bahrain store stands out quickly.
- Short distances. Local stock can reach most addresses the same day or next day.
- New apps keep arriving. Keeta launched in January 2026, and Jahez announced a Snoonu launch a month later. Both teach shoppers to order everything online.
For example, a Saudi brand already selling in Khobar can serve Manama from the same warehouse. Bahrain becomes a bonus market rather than a new project.
Two ways to sell online in Bahrain
You can sell into Bahrain from abroad, or set up in Bahrain with a local company. Most brands start with the first and move to the second once sales are steady.
| Sell in cross-border | Set up in Bahrain | |
|---|---|---|
| How | noon, Amazon.ae or your own store shipping from KSA, UAE or abroad | Bahraini CR through Sijilat, local stock or courier |
| Local company needed | ||
| VAT | No registration for parcels shipped in | Register above BHD 37,500 a year |
| Customs | Duty and VAT on parcels of BHD 100+ | Paid once when stock is imported |
| Benefit and BenefitPay | Through a marketplace only | |
| Delivery speed | 2–4 business days | Same day or next day |
| Best for | Testing demand | Steady sales and repeat customers |
So which should you pick? If you're new to Bahrain, test cross-border for a few months. Your sales data then tells you whether a CR is worth it.
What sells best online in Bahrain?
Hobby and leisure, electronics and fashion lead. Together they make up almost two-thirds of online spend.

Social commerce is big here too. Many Bahraini shoppers discover brands on Instagram and order through WhatsApp, so plan your marketing around those two apps.
How to start selling online in Bahrain
Steps 1–3 get you selling cross-border. Steps 4–6 add a local base.
- 1
List on noon and Amazon.ae
Both reach Bahraini shoppers from the UAE or Saudi Arabia. No Bahraini company needed.
- 2
Sort your VAT position
Parcels shipped in from abroad need no Bahraini VAT number. Register with the National Bureau for Revenue before you hold stock in Bahrain.
- 3
Price for the BHD 100 line
Show prices in BHD with three decimals and VAT included. Keep parcels under BHD 100 or charge duty at checkout.
- 4
Get a CR through Sijilat
Add the e-commerce activity and link a working website.
- 5
Switch on local payments
A BENEFIT-connected gateway adds Benefit debit and BenefitPay alongside cards and Apple Pay.
- 6
Stock locally and launch
Use a local 3PL or courier for same-day delivery, then push your bestsellers on Instagram.
Do you need a licence to sell online in Bahrain?
Only if you sell from inside Bahrain. A local online business, including one that sells on Instagram, needs a commercial registration (CR) with an approved online-selling activity. Selling cross-border through a marketplace needs no Bahraini licence.
Your CR comes from Sijilat, the Ministry of Industry and Commerce's one-stop portal. You apply, add activities and renew there. What to know:
- E-commerce activity. Add the eStore activity and enter your live website address. Register the domain and get a basic store online before you apply.
- Foreign ownership. Foreigners can own up to 100% of a company for many activities. Sijilat shows the limit for each one.
- Address. A standard CR needs a commercial address, such as a small office or a business-centre desk.
- Sijili. The virtual CR for home-based sellers needs no address, but only Bahraini nationals can hold one.
If you'd rather hand it off, compare company formation providers. The licence rules for all four smaller Gulf markets sit in our guide to ecommerce rules in Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain and Oman.
VAT and customs: what changes your price?
Bahrain charges 10% VAT on most goods, and shoppers expect it inside the shelf price. A BD 9.900 price tag already holds BD 0.900 of VAT.
Who registers?
- Bahraini businesses register once taxable sales pass BHD 37,500 a year.
- Foreign sellers holding stock in Bahrain register from the first sale. There's no threshold.
- Cross-border parcels don't count. A parcel shipped from Dubai or Riyadh to a Bahraini shopper is an import, taxed at the border from BHD 100, so it doesn't make you register.
- Marketplace sellers should ask the marketplace whether it accounts for VAT on their sales.

Your business
Past 12 months, or what you expect over the coming period
- Mandatory: > BHD 37,500
- Voluntary: > BHD 18,750unverified
Voluntary registration available
You are above the voluntary threshold. Registering lets you reclaim input VAT on stock, imports and ads, but you must then charge VAT and file returns.
BHD 12,500 to go before mandatory registration
Estimates based on published VAT rules as of Oct 2026. Not tax advice; confirm with ZATCA, the FTA, NBR, the Oman Tax Authority or a licensed tax agent.
The BHD 100 parcel rule
Since mid-May 2026, personal parcels worth BHD 100 or more pay customs duty plus VAT. Below that line, both are waived. The old limit was BHD 300.
Duty is usually 5%, the shared GCC rate. That makes the line a real pricing decision for anyone shipping in from abroad.
Every GCC limit side by side is in GCC duty-free thresholds.
How do Bahraini shoppers pay?
Mostly with Benefit debit cards and the BenefitPay app, plus Visa, Mastercard and Apple Pay. Offer all four and you've covered almost everyone.
Add two more for conversion:
- Tamara for split payments on bigger baskets. Tabby doesn't operate in Bahrain, so Tamara is the BNPL to add.
- Cash on delivery (COD), confirmed on WhatsApp, for first-time buyers.
There's one catch. Shopify Payments and Stripe aren't available for Bahraini companies. Benefit and BenefitPay need a gateway connected to BENEFIT, such as Tap, Checkout.com or a Bahraini bank.
Gateway costs, three-decimal pricing and setup steps are in our guide to payment methods in Bahrain.
Marketplaces: noon and Amazon.ae
The two big Gulf marketplaces both reach Bahrain, and they're the fastest way to a first sale.
- noon runs a Bahrain store. Chinese companies can reach it through noon Global Shipping, while other sellers should check Bahrain eligibility in their seller account.
- Amazon.ae ships to Bahrain under Global Export. Buyers pay delivery and import fees at checkout, and FBA sellers in the UAE are enrolled automatically.
- Delivery apps like talabat, Keeta and Jahez handle groceries, beauty and gifts. They suit local brands with stock on the island.
Compare the routes in how international sellers join noon and our Amazon UAE seller guide.
Delivery and the King Fahd Causeway
Bahrain is an island with three ways in: road over the King Fahd Causeway from Saudi Arabia, air into Bahrain International Airport and sea through Khalifa Bin Salman Port.
The causeway is the one most sellers use. Trucks usually clear in 1–3 hours, with customs on both sides, so keep your paperwork ready.

Some sellers keep stock in Dammam or Khobar and cross daily, while bigger brands use a 3PL near the Bahrain Logistics Zone by the port. Lane prices and transit times are in our GCC cross-border shipping guide.
Arabic, English or both?
Both. English works for most Bahraini shoppers and the large expat community, so an English-first store is normal.
Arabic still matters. It reaches Bahraini families, and it builds trust on product pages, invoices and returns policies. Run a bilingual store with Arabic names for local payment methods: "بطاقة بنفت" and "بنفت بي".
Worked example: two parcels from Dubai
Let's take a beauty brand shipping own-store orders to Manama from a Dubai free-zone warehouse. Its stock hasn't paid GCC duty yet, so Bahrain charges it.
| BD 85 order | BD 120 order | |
|---|---|---|
| Above BHD 100? | No | Yes |
| Customs duty (5%) | BD 0.000 | BD 6.000 |
| VAT (10% of value plus duty) | BD 0.000 | BD 12.600 |
| Border cost | BD 0.000 | BD 18.600 (15.5%) |
That BD 35 jump in basket adds over BD 18 in border costs. So the brand caps its gift sets at BD 99.900, shipping included, and charges duty at checkout on anything bigger. Try your own basket in the landed cost calculator.
Bahrain launch checklist
Notes for Saudi sellers
- Your Saudi VAT number doesn't cover Bahrain. Parcels over the causeway need no Bahraini number, but stock in a Bahraini warehouse does.
- Tamara works in both countries, so shoppers who split payments in Saudi Arabia find the same option in Bahrain.
Notes for UAE sellers
- Amazon FBA in the UAE already offers your eligible listings to Bahraini buyers through Global Export.
- Your UAE gateway can take Bahraini cards and Apple Pay. Add a Bahraini entity for Benefit.
- Dubai is a good hub for Bahrain plus Oman, Qatar and Kuwait.
Notes for Chinese sellers
- noon Global Shipping reaches Bahrain with only a Chinese business registration.
- Price for the BHD 100 line. It applies to every parcel you ship direct from China.
- A Dubai company opens the rest of the Gulf. See UAE company setup for Chinese businesses.
Notes for Bahrain residents
- Social sellers need a CR too. Selling on Instagram or WhatsApp counts as online selling, so register before you advertise.
- BenefitPay Business Accounts let single-owner CRs receive payments free of charge, a cheap start before a full gateway.

Frequently asked questions
Yes. Search your activity on Sijilat before you apply: the result shows whether foreigners can own up to 100% or need a Bahraini partner. Expect to rent a commercial address, since the home-based Sijili route is closed to foreigners. Many foreign brands skip the company at first and sell through noon or Amazon.ae.
