Payment Methods in Bahrain: BenefitPay, Benefit Debit & Gateways

Key takeaways
  • BenefitPay handled 466 million payments worth BD10.2bn in 2025, about 280 per resident. It's the strongest everyday digital-payment habit in the Gulf.
  • Your must-have stack: Benefit debit, BenefitPay, Visa/Mastercard and Apple Pay, plus Tamara and confirmed cash on delivery.
  • Local Benefit payments need a gateway connected to BENEFIT, such as Tap, Checkout.com or your bank, and these onboard Bahrain-registered companies.
  • Tamara covers Bahrain and Tabby doesn't. Shopify Payments and Stripe aren't available for Bahraini companies.
  • Prices use three decimals (BD 9.900) and include 10% VAT. Parcels worth BD 100 or more pay duty and VAT since May 2026.

Shoppers in Bahrain pay online with Benefit debit cards, the BenefitPay app, Visa and Mastercard, and Apple Pay. Offer all four and you've covered almost everyone.

Bahrain is the smallest market in the Gulf by population, but it's the most used to paying digitally. Bahrainis use BenefitPay for everything from coffee to rent.

That habit is your opening. Shoppers here already trust their phones with money, so a smooth local checkout with the right logos converts well.

Below, you'll see how Bahrain pays, which methods to switch on, what gateways cost and how to pick one. Notes for Shopify, Salla and Zid stores, foreign companies and Saudi sellers come at the end.

How do shoppers in Bahrain pay online?

Most online payments in Bahrain go through local Benefit debit cards, the BenefitPay app or international cards. Cash on delivery still exists, but it's a smaller slice than in Kuwait or Oman.

Every debit card issued in Bahrain runs on the local Benefit network, and BenefitPay sits on most phones. Expats and high earners add credit cards and Apple Pay to the mix, especially for bigger orders.

Here's what each method means for your store:

  • Benefit debit cards. Local bank cards on BENEFIT, Bahrain's national payment network.
  • BenefitPay. BENEFIT's wallet app. Shoppers pay by scanning a QR code, by mobile number or through an in-app checkout on your site.
  • Visa and Mastercard. Credit cards and international debit cards, while Amex is less common here.
  • Apple Pay. The quickest checkout on iPhones, with Samsung Pay covering many Android phones.
  • Fawri+. BENEFIT's instant bank transfers, mostly sent inside BenefitPay, which is how many small sellers take payment.
  • Buy now, pay later (BNPL). Tamara serves Bahrain, so shoppers split the price and you get paid upfront.
  • Cash on delivery (COD). The shopper pays the courier at the door, which helps you win a first order from people who don't know your brand.

Other wallets exist too, such as stc pay and Credimax's MaxWallet, but they're rarely needed on a web checkout.

BENEFIT, Benefit debit and BenefitPay: how local payments work

BENEFIT is the company behind Bahrain's national payment switch. It runs the debit network, the Benefit Payment Gateway, Fawri+ transfers and the BenefitPay app.

Why does that matter to you? A Benefit debit card often can't pay through an ordinary Visa or Mastercard checkout. It needs the Benefit Payment Gateway, which takes every local debit card on websites and apps.

You don't sign up with BENEFIT yourself. You reach it through an acquirer, meaning a bank or payment company that processes card payments for merchants:

  • Banks and local acquirers. Bahraini banks, Credimax and AFS (Arab Financial Services) run online payment gateways for Bahraini businesses.
  • Regional gateways. Tap says it's licensed in Bahrain and supports Benefit and BenefitPay. Checkout.com lists the Benefit Payment Gateway for merchants based in Bahrain.

BenefitPay needs its own merchant registration through your acquirer. You can then show it as a QR code or an in-app checkout.

BenefitPay is on most phones in Bahrain, so a one-tap local option converts well.

Which payment methods should your store offer?

Offer the methods Bahraini shoppers look for, in this order:

  1. Benefit debit, with the Benefit logo clearly visible.
  2. BenefitPay, as a QR code on desktop and an app switch on mobile.
  3. Apple Pay for one-tap checkout on iPhones.
  4. Visa and Mastercard for credit cards and foreign cards.
  5. Tamara for split payments on bigger baskets.
  6. Cash on delivery, confirmed on WhatsApp before dispatch.

Why does order matter? A shopper with only a local debit card scans your checkout for that logo, and if they don't see it, they leave.

Benefit payments use a redirect. The shopper goes to a secure hosted page, enters their card and a one-time code, then returns to your store. Test that round trip on a phone before launch, because a broken return page looks like a failed payment.

Pricing in Bahraini dinars: three decimals and 10% VAT

The Bahraini dinar (BD or BHD) splits into 1,000 fils, not 100, so prices have three decimals: BD 9.900, not BD 9.90.

The dinar is pegged at 0.376 to the US dollar, so your prices stay stable. Here's what to check:

  • Display. Show BD 12.500, not BD 12.5, because a missing digit looks foreign.
  • Charm prices. End on .900 or .990, since a two-digit .99 looks wrong here.
  • VAT. Bahrain's VAT is 10%, and shoppers expect it inside the shelf price.
  • Gateway amounts. Most gateways take amounts in fils, so BD 9.900 is sent as 9900. Checkout.com also needs the last digit to be 0.

Try it with your own price. Pick a base price and see the BHD figure with VAT and sensible rounding:

Markup is applied, then local VAT is added on top.

Consumer prices in KSA and the UAE are expected to include VAT.

Optional % added to the net price per market (e.g. to cover duty, shipping or BNPL fees).

Rounding style

Prices ending in 9 (SAR 99, 149, 199; AED 49, 99) dominate on noon, Amazon.sa and Shein (observation). For 3-decimal currencies this gives x.x90 endings.

Your font supports the new Saudi riyal sign (U+20C1), so SAR prices use it. SAMA guidance puts the riyal sign to the left of the number, with a space, in every language. The text abbreviation ر.س is usually written after the number in Arabic.

KWD is pegged to an undisclosed basket, so its rate moves slightly. ≈0.31 per USD is an approximation; review it quarterly.

Rounding, refunds and partial captures are covered in pricing in 3-decimal currencies.

What does a payment gateway cost in Bahrain?

A payment gateway takes the shopper's payment and pays it into your bank account. In Bahrain, payment companies are licensed by the Central Bank of Bahrain (CBB).

Bahraini gateways quote on application. Budget for these layers:

  • A percentage per payment. Local debit is usually the cheapest method. Velvetica Studio, a Gulf Shopify agency, reports card rates of about 2.5–3% plus a small fixed fee.
  • VAT on the fee. Bahraini providers add 10% VAT to what they charge you.
  • Setup and monthly fees. Some gateways charge them and some don't, so ask before you sign.
  • Your platform's fee. Shopify adds 0.2–2% when you use an outside gateway, and every Bahrain Shopify store does.
  • Extras. Refunds, chargebacks and currency conversion can carry their own fees too.

Worked example: a BD 30 order on Shopify

Let's price one BD 30 card order on Shopify's Basic plan at 2.75%, the midpoint of Velvetica's reported card rates.

Fee lineAmount
Gateway fee (2.75%)BD 0.825
10% VAT on the gateway feeBD 0.083
Shopify third-party fee (Basic, 2%)BD 0.600
Total cost of the paymentBD 1.508 (5.0%)

The Shopify fee is almost as big as the gateway fee. It drops to 0.6% on Shopify's Advanced plan, and on Zid or WooCommerce there's no platform fee at all.

So what should you do? Ask each gateway for its Benefit and BenefitPay rates separately from cards, plus any fixed fee in fils. Our guide to payment gateway fees shows how to compare quotes line by line.

How do you choose a payment gateway in Bahrain?

Start with where your company is registered, because that decides which gateways will take you long before price does.

Where your company is registeredBenefit and BenefitPay?Typical gateways
BahrainYesTap, Credimax, AFS, your bank's gateway, Checkout.com
UAE or Saudi ArabiaRarely, ask case by caseTap, Checkout.com, Amazon Payment Services, PayTabs (cards and Apple Pay)
Elsewhere (US, EU, China)NoCheckout.com, Adyen, PayPal, cross-border providers

If you hold a Bahraini commercial registration (CR), pick a gateway that switches on Benefit and BenefitPay for you. You'll get local debit, better approval rates and BHD payouts.

Follow these steps to pick yours and go live:

  1. 1

    Confirm your entity

A Bahraini CR opens up Benefit and BenefitPay. Without one, see the notes for foreign companies below.

  2. 2

    List your must-have methods

Benefit debit, BenefitPay, Apple Pay, Visa/Mastercard, Tamara and COD through your courier.

  3. 3

    Check your platform

On Shopify or Zid, pick a gateway whose app includes Benefit and BenefitPay, not just cards.

  4. 4

Get two or three written quotes

Ask for rates split by method, fixed fees in fils, monthly fees, payout timing and refund fees.

  5. 5

Buy now, pay later in Bahrain

BNPL lets shoppers split the price into instalments while you get paid upfront. In Bahrain, that means Tamara.

Tabby covers Saudi Arabia, the UAE and Kuwait, but not Bahrain. Tamara covers all four markets, so it's the one to add here.

It's worth it if you sell fashion, beauty, fragrance or electronics. Splitting a BD 80 order into four payments makes it feel much smaller.

Expect to pay more than for cards, as sellers typically report 4–6% for Tamara, depending on category and volume. Tamara's free Shopify app covers Bahrain, and it pays out weekly.

Setup takes only a few steps. See how to add Tamara to Shopify, or our Tabby vs Tamara comparison if you also sell in Saudi Arabia or the UAE.

Cash on delivery in Bahrain

COD still wins first orders, but it matters less in Bahrain than in most of the Gulf, because BenefitPay has made paying by phone the everyday habit.

Bahrain's short distances help too, since orders from local stock often arrive the same day or next day, so the gap between order and cash stays short.

So keep COD, but control it:

  • Confirm every order on WhatsApp before it ships.
  • Offer a small discount for paying with Benefit or BenefitPay.
  • Let couriers take card or BenefitPay at the door, so "cash" on delivery isn't only cash.

Notes for Shopify, Salla and Zid stores

  • Shopify. No Shopify Payments in Bahrain, so connect a gateway like Tap that includes Benefit and BenefitPay. Our guide to Shopify in Bahrain covers the full setup.
  • Zid. Zid lists Bahrain among its countries and connects outside gateways such as Tap. Zid's own payments are built around Saudi stores, so use a Bahrain gateway for Benefit. See our Zid guide.
  • Salla. Salla is built for Saudi merchants, and Salla Pay focuses on mada and Saudi cards. It can sell into Bahrain, but ask Salla whether Benefit is available before you commit.
  • Check the third decimal. Place a test order on any platform and confirm the gateway receives BD 9.900, not BD 9.90.

Notes for foreign companies

  • Cards work, Benefit is harder. Bahraini Visa, Mastercard and Apple Pay payments work on most UAE or Saudi gateways, including a UAE Stripe account. Benefit-only debit cards don't.
  • A Bahraini entity unlocks the rest. Benefit and BenefitPay are onboarded for Bahraini CRs.
  • Price DDP near BD 100. Since May 2026, parcels worth BD 100 or more pay customs duty plus VAT. Collect it at checkout so the shopper isn't surprised at the door.

The wider rules are in our guide to ecommerce rules in Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain and Oman.

Notes for Chinese sellers

  • Start on a marketplace. Noon runs a Bahrain store and collects payment for you, and Amazon.ae has shipped to Bahrain since October 2020.
  • Your own site needs a Gulf entity. A UAE company opens regional gateways for cards and Apple Pay. Benefit needs a Bahraini company or a local partner.

Notes for Saudi sellers

  • Bahrain is next door. Stock in Dammam or Khobar reaches Bahrain by road over the King Fahd Causeway.
  • Your Saudi gateway takes Bahraini cards and Apple Pay. For Benefit and BenefitPay, add a Bahraini entity or sell through noon.
  • Tamara works in both. One BNPL contract can cover Saudi and Bahraini shoppers.
